In medieval England, a declaration that a
criminal was outside the protection of the
law, with his or her lands and goods
forfeited to the Crown, and all civil rights
being set aside. It was a lucrative royal
`privilege'; Magna Carta restricted its use,
and under Edward III it was further modified.
Some outlaws, such as Robin Hood, became
popular heroes. In teh US, professional
criminals are commonly referred to as
outlaws.
